Welcome to the Wushu Kung Fu Club at Ohio State!
We are a collegiate sport club at The Ohio State University dedicated to teaching and practicing wushu, an exciting form of modern kung fu featuring jumps and acrobatics! We provide a friendly and welcoming environment where people at any skill or experience level can train, grow, and have fun in a supportive community.
We welcome new members at any time, no prior experience needed! If you’re interested, feel free to contact us via email or Instagram, or just drop by any of our practices, we’d love to have you join us!
About Wushu
Wushu is the modernized, sport version of traditional Chinese kung fu. It is performance-oriented, combining martial arts techniques with jumping kicks, spins, and tumbling, emphasizing athleticism and artistry. Wushu includes both bare-handed forms and weapons, such as swords, staffs, and spears. It is the martial art practiced by Chinese action stars like Jet Li and Donnie Yen and showcased in movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Once Upon a Time in China, and Ip Man. Beyond Chinese cinema, wushu is also the inspiration for the bending styles in the Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
Practice Schedule
We have practices 3 times a week. Feel free to attend as many or as few as you want! For the Autumn 2025 semester, our practice times and locations are:
- 7-9 PM Mondays in the RPAC Multipurpose Room 3
- 7-9 PM Wednesday in the RPAC Multipurpose Room 1
- 7-9 PM Fridays in the RPAC Multipurpose Room 3
Please note the different room on Wednesdays.
Performances and Competition
We offer several opportunities for members to show off their skills in performances and competitions, though participation is completely optional. We often perform for various cultural clubs and events around campus, such as TASA’s Moon Festival and CASA’s Chinese New Year. These performances are short demonstrations of what you’ve been working on and a fun way to celebrate your progress and showcase your skills.
For those interested in competition, we typically attend two competitions a year, the University Wushu Games in the Autumn semester (hosted by the University of Maryland) and the Collegiate Wushu Tournament in the Spring semester (rotating host). These competitions are open to all club members, with different divisions based on experience level, so you will compete against people who have been practicing for the same amount of time as you. These competitions are great opportunities to challenge yourself and connect with wushu athletes from other schools.
